The 16-bit PDP-11, and the 12-bit PDP-8, and all the rest of those weird-size machines from DEC (18, 36 bit) and a lot of other bizarre (by today's standards) designs date a good decade or more before the Intel 8008 and other 8-bit microprocessors (6502, etc) showed up. :)
