Snort is available for Windows
(http://www.snort.org/dl/binaries/win32/) as well as Linux. I haven't
played around too much with free HIDS for Windows but if you poke
around the SANS reading room (http://www.sans.org/rr/) it looks like a
number of papers address this issue.
