I think Dan Morrill came pretty close to hitting it on the head. However,
I don't believe passion is enough. I've known a number of security
professionals
who loved what they did but lacked the intelligence and therefore understanding
to do anything with it.
In addition, I feel a true 'hacker' and/or 'security expert' also seeks
to find better ways of dealing with the problems they're facing and not
necessarily rely on the canned resources available.
For me, it comes down to four traits: Passion, Intelligence, Understanding
and Innovation
I'd also like to make an amendment to my original statement:
The only differences between a 'script kiddie' and 90% of the so-called
'security experts' out there are their motives and the canned tools they
use.
