ESA-2011-036: RSA, The Security Division of EMC, announces the release of a
Security Fix for RSA® Adaptive Authentication (On-Premise)

Advisories

Updated December 6, 2011

Summary:

An issue with RSA® Adaptive Authentication (On-Premise) was discovered which in
certain circumstances might affect the Device Recovery capability and Device
Identification used by the defined policy.

Description:

CVE Identifiers: CVE-2011-2741, CVE-2011-2742

In certain circumstances the accuracy of the Device Recovery capability and
Device Identification used by the defined policy might be affected by the data
elements sent from the end user?s device.

This Security Fix provides remediation for items that cause this behavior
through product fixes, as well as configuration and policy changes. More
information on each of these items is included below.

RSA has identified and addressed the potential security flaws as part of this
Security Fix:

?In certain circumstances, device recovery capabilities and device
identification used by the defined policy may be impacted by the data elements
sent from the end user?s device. This may potentially allow the system to
recover a previously non-registered device or allow access for a registered
device despite forensic differences. This potential flaw affects both web and
mobile browsers. CVE (Common Vulnerability Enumeration) ID for this issue
CVE-2011-2741.
?In certain circumstances, the application may match device tokens sent from
mobile apps without proper forensic evaluation used by the defined policy. This
may potentially allow access from the mobile device to the protected
application without a challenge. This potential flaw only affects mobile apps
and does not affect web browsers. CVE (Common Vulnerability Enumeration) ID for
this issue CVE-2011-2742.
In addition, the Security Fix provides better capabilities to differentiate
between activities originating from web browsers, mobile browsers, and mobile
apps. This also allows customers to enable / disable the Device Recovery for
each.

Due to forensic similarities between browsers across mobile devices, RSA
recommends that customers use these capabilities to disable device recovery
specifically for mobile browsers.

Note: Due to the nature of above changes, deployment of this Security Fix may
have an impact on existing challenge rates. As with any other Security Fix, RSA
recommends that customers fully test the fix before going into production.

Affected Versions:

The following versions of Adaptive Authentication (On-Premise) might be
affected:

6.0.2.1 SP1 Patch 2 and SP1 Patch 3
6.0.2.1 SP2 and SP2 Patch 1
6.0.2.1 SP3

Recommendation:

We strongly recommend that RSA customers should obtain the following security
fixes:

RSA AAOP 6.0.2.1 SP1 Patch 2 customers should obtain 6.0.2.1 SP1 P2 HF460 from
SecurCare Online.
RSA AAOP 6.0.2.1 SP1 Patch 3 customers should obtain 6.0.2.1 SP1 P3 HF170 from
SecurCare Online.
RSA AAOP 6.0.2.1 SP2 customers should obtain 6.0.2.1 SP2 HF390 from SecurCare
Online.
RSA AAOP 6.0.2.1 SP2 Patch 1 customers should obtain 6.0.2.1 SP2 P1 HF210 from
SecurCare Online.
RSA AAOP 6.0.2.1 SP3 customers should obtain 6.0.2.1 SP3 HF210 from SecurCare
Online.

Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Base Score:

The Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Base Score for the items
identified in this advisory are:

CVE-2011-2741: 6.8 (AV:N/AC:M/Au:N/C:P/I:P/A:P)

CVE-2011-2741: 6.8 (AV:N/AC:M/Au:N/C:P/I:P/A:P)

RSA recommends that all customers take into account both the base score and any
relevant temporal and environmental scores, which may impact the potential
severity associated with a particular security vulnerability.
